6:12p - Homeland Security
Gen. John Gordon -

Cyberterrorism not really the appropriate term. No actual cyber terror attacks. The Who is a rock group, the what is cybersecurity.

War on terrorism... intelligence, major IT challenge and a market.

Can do both, more security more liberties, trade between security and privacy is one I really don't want to have to make. Government wants solutions that don't impact privacy.

National Cyberspace Security Response System - created a division to manage and increase communication.

Need analysts who can understand big picture trends and economic effects.
Council of europe cybercrime convention given to senate for approval.
IPv6
We want to know from you what the appropriate role of government is.
Cybersecurity is not purely the role of government.

Penrose Albright - 20 minutes to say what S&T directorate is. Don't read too much into the name HSARPA.

8:37p - Security theater
Had dinner last night with 4 other Ford guys and a Sun guy, great seafood ciopinno.

People kept quoting Bruce, Security theater is a great one for things that don't actually improve security but make a great show, and the thing between the chair and the keyboard. There were complaints that the talk had no slides, was too off the cuff and not technical enough.

"Need a book on protecting your identity." Hmm, maybe I should write one.

Health and human svcs doing certs seriously?

Wet morning, raining heavily... Wonderful, the rain stopped in time to walk to the afternoon sessions.

Common Themes

- Baselines and ways of verifying that a machine coming in meets my specs
- security metrics, widely varying opinions on what they should be
- Automated way of verifying code
